TIPS for healthy living

I have been on a weight loss plan that worked for my friend. What extra do you offer??

Following a diet is a great start, but our program offers much more than dietary recommendations. While your current diet may work for some, it may not be tailored to your specific needs. Our program focuses on educating you about the optimal lifestyle choices for you. By understanding your unique genetic makeup and lifestyle factors, we can provide personalised guidance to help you achieve your health goals and maintain long-term wellness. Our goal is to empower you to make sustainable lifestyle changes that will benefit you for life

If my DNA or other results are bad, why would I want to know?

While some results may indicate areas of concern, our programs are designed to empower you to take control of your health destiny. Through personalised recommendations and the science of epigenetics, we show you how to make positive changes. By addressing potential risks and promoting healthy habits, our goal is to enhance your overall well-being and improve your quality of life. With our guidance, you have the opportunity to rewrite your health story and create a brighter, healthier future.

I had an ancestry test already and they gave me some health tips

If you’ve already undergone an ancestry test and received some health tips, we can enhance your assessment by running your DNA results through our comprehensive program. While other companies may only analyse a few SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) to provide basic health advice, our program examines a much broader range of genetic markers. This allows us to generate a far more comprehensive report covering numerous traits, diseases, and conditions relevant to your health. Feel free to request a sample report from us to compare the depth and breadth of our analysis.

Do you offer Ancestry results?

Yes, we do offer ancestry reports, and our calculations are based on a more comprehensive set of variables compared to other programs. However, please note that as our program is currently in Beta mode, we do not have the database capability to introduce you to potential relatives at this time. We recommend utilizing our services to enhance your life through improved health.

How long does it take to give me results from my DNA test?

Typically, it takes about 6 to 8 weeks to receive the results of your DNA test. However, there’s no need to worry as there are plenty of things you can learn and do in the meantime. The process involves using a sample of your saliva. We use this initial sample to grow more DNA in the lab, which is why it takes some time to provide you with your results.

You say evidence backed. How do I know what evidence you use?

When you receive a report based on your DNA, which analyzes an average of 100,000 SNPs per report (versus a maximum of 1,000 by other companies), we provide references and weight the recommendations based on supporting evidence. The company we partner with for DNA analysis currently draws from over 100,000 scientific papers, ensuring that our recommendations are firmly evidence-backed.

Understanding DNA: The Blueprint of Life

It is now possible to increase the chances of Healthy Ageing through DNA. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the remarkable blueprint that defines who we are. Imagine it as a long, twisting ribbon neatly coiled within the nucleus of each cell in our bodies. This ribbon carries the instructions set in motion at the moment of our conception, guiding the development of every part of us. These instructions determine everything from our physical traits, like eye color and height, to complex biological processes that affect our health. Essentially, DNA is the code that makes each of us unique.

The Rapid Advances in DNA Technology

Technology is advancing rapidly. Since we started mapping the human genome, scientists have made exponential gains in understanding DNA. There are four “letters,” each of which create a base pair. These letters are A, G, C, and T. These base pairs influence our health and behavior. Some pairs are relatively common, whereas others are much rarer. The mutation that caused fair skin and blue eyes, for example, only came about 50,000 years ago. It affects about 6% of the world’s population. Everyone with blue eyes is related to that first person whose genes mutated to give them fair skin and blue eyes. This helped them survive better in the northern climate, where the sun is weaker.

The Immense Complexity of the Human Genome

To put it into perspective how complex the human genome is, there are 3.234 billion base pairs, or letters, in your genome. If you took all the strands of DNA out of each cell in your body and unraveled them, you would find that each cell holds about 2 meters of DNA strands. Combine the DNA from the 37 trillion cells that make up your body, and they could stretch to the sun and back 400 times! This immense length highlights the incredible compactness and efficiency with which our genetic information is stored and managed within our cells.

Personalised Medicine: Tailoring Health to Your DNA

The fact that you are an individual is why our health service is struggling—you cannot expect “off the shelf” medicine to fit one and all! You are not like “most other people.” We can offer an opportunity for Healthy Ageing through DNA because we utilise the best brains in the DNA analysis industry. They offer more than just a cursory test of a sample of anyone’s DNA. Using state-of-the-art technology and advanced AI to analyse millions of data points at once, we can give you risk scores for potential diseases, plus a personal plan that will help you (not a generic person) reduce the associated risks.

Understanding Your Traits and Enhancing Your Life

It’s not just about health, but about traits too. Are you susceptible to depression, or a natural leader? Perhaps you have enormous empathy or suffer from anxiety. There are hundreds of traits that, once you understand them, will help you move forward and get on with your life with much more understanding of who you are and why you do things. Some are highly influenced by genes, others less so. It is like looking at a long ingredients list—you can identify who you are. This helps not only with your career but with life and social interactions too

Alzheimer’s Explained: Early Awareness and Prevention

Alzheimers awareness

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a group of brain disorders that cause memory loss and cognitive decline. It’s primarily characterised by the build-up of two types of abnormal proteins in the brain: tau tangles inside nerve cells and amyloid plaques outside them. These proteins accumulate in areas affecting memory and thinking, such as the cortex and hippocampus.

The Science Behind Alzheimer’s

Research indicates that these protein tangles are significantly more prevalent in Alzheimer’s patients. Therefore, many current studies focus on preventing or removing these tangles to slow the disease’s progression. However, no drugs have yet proven effective, although Donanemab is a promising candidate.

A Different Perspective on Tangles

Some experts believe that these tangles are symptoms rather than causes of Alzheimer’s, likening them to spider webs in a derelict building—they indicate a problem but are not the root cause. This perspective suggests that we need to identify what causes these tangles to form in the first place.

Challenges with Current Treatments

At the Healthy Ageing Academy, we are cautious about pinning hopes on a single drug. Firstly, such drugs are only available after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, often when the disease is already advanced. Secondly, Alzheimer’s is a diverse disease with multiple variants, making it unlikely that one drug will work for everyone.

The Importance of Prevention

Our primary concern is the focus on treatment rather than prevention overlooks the importance of maintaining health to prevent disease. The disease industry is substantial, but we believe in empowering individuals to avoid becoming part of that system. We do this by helping indviduals learn why preventing Alzheimer’s diseaseis so important.

The Impact of Alzheimer’s on Daily Life

Alzheimer’s is a progressive, fatal disease that gradually robs you of your ability to perform everyday tasks, from brushing your teeth to holding a conversation. Eventually, even eating becomes difficult as the brain shuts down essential functions.
